❉ The Cabinet of Curiosities
Hanart Forum
Hong Kong
2025
Curated by Michael Whittle (Lead Artist and Curator), hosted by Tsong-Zung Chang (Johnson Chang) at Hanart Forum, Happy Valley, Hong Kong (January 26 – March 8, 2025)
This major research exhibition transformed a renovated three-floor Edwardian row-house into an intimate, contemporary collector's apartment, reimagining the Renaissance Wunderkammer as a playful, poetic, and immersive 21st-century collection. Over 40 international artists and scientists contributed works spanning astrophysics, molecular biology, quantum physics, mathematics, and beyond, blending painting, sculpture, video, decorative arts (carpets, fashion, furniture), interactive installations, and performances including a Japanese tea ceremony.
Highlights ranged from diagrammatic glass wind chimes mapping particle physics and gravity equations to speculative curiosities exploring analogy and metaphor in scientific inquiry. Guided tours and layered displays encouraged personal exploration, revealing hidden narratives in a domestic setting that blurred boundaries between empirical rigor and imaginative wonder.
Echoing Novalis’s insight that “the perfected form of the sciences must be poetical,” the project positioned art as an equal partner to science—fostering a polyphonic dialogue where knowledge appears interconnected, fragile, and wondrous. As a landmark in interdisciplinary practice, it transformed a historic space into a living cabinet of contemporary scientific poetry.
